Created under the guidance of Nelson artist Lloyd Harwood and in collaboration with the Department of Conservation, this community-built artwork celebrates Aotearoa's native flora and fauna. Local creators spent two Sunday afternoons mastering professional composition, mixed-media techniques, and light art secrets to bring this vision to life. By combining custom and hand-drawn designs with paint, wood, paper, feathers, and natural products, they have built a stunning, layered "nocturnal" world. This work is part of the ‘Make It’ Nelson Campaign.
After graduating, Lloyd Harwood tutored sculptural ceramics in the UK before moving to New Zealand in 1987. A longtime arts educator and community arts advocate, he continues to paint and sculpt, exhibiting nationally and internationally. Lloyd has received two national awards, holds NZ Academy artist membership, and has helped shape Nelson’s creative community through numerous arts organisations.
